Fun Places to Visit in Pittsburgh This Summer

Did you know that Pittsburgh is one of the most livable cities in the United States? This is due to its low population density, affordability, and low crime rates. Perhaps you knew that, but did you also know that it is one of the best places to spend your summer? There are numerous activities to take part in and places to visit all summer long, and our Pittsburgh transportation service is here to point you towards the right direction to guarantee that your summer is as fruitful and enjoyable as can be.

We also want to recommend employing the services of our Pittsburgh car service for all your summer excursions. Let our professionally trained chauffeurs take the wheel as you enjoy the luxury amenities of our vehicles, the company of your friends and family, and look forward to arriving at any one of these fantastic locations.

Mount Washington

Mount Washington is not an actual mountain, it is a charming neighborhood within the Steel City; the neighborhood is known for its panoramic views of the city. If you are looking for a free activity this summer, simply make your way to Mount Washington. The neighborhood is located on the hillside on the South Shore. The park found right along the edge of the hill provides beautiful views of Downtown like you will see nowhere else in Pittsburgh.

Sandcastle Water Park

Do you prefer waterparks to roller coasters? Well, you are completely justified this season, everyone needs to cool off in the summer heat, right? Make your way to the Sandcastle Water Park located along Sandcastle Drive in West Homestead. Although it is smaller than conventional water parks, it is still a lot of fun, featuring a regular pool, a wave pool, and a number of water slides. There is also a hot tub and a bar at the premises, but we highly doubt anyone will be using the hot tub in this heat. Visitors get lockers at a small fee and you will also find a shoe cubby by the swimming pool. If you feel famished during your visit, there are plenty of restaurants around for you to choose from. Note, however, daily passes are quite expensive, about $40 per head, so if you are planning to visit for more than one day, we suggest getting a season pass which goes for about $100.

Optical Illusion Hill

Also known as Gravity Park, Optical Illusion Hill can be found along McKinney Road in Wexford. This is arguably one of the most mysterious places in the state, and perhaps the world. The intersection between Kummer and McKinney Roads runs upward but you can leave your vehicle on neutral and it will roll up hill. This may not be summer-related but if you have never seen this sorcery for yourself, you have to take a drive up there this summer.

Nationality Rooms

Nationality Rooms is found inside the Cathedral of Learning located along Fifth Avenue. This museum is actually the tallest academic structure in the Western hemisphere. The Nationality Rooms are 31 rooms specifically designed to represent the diverse cultures that make up the Pittsburgh community. The 18 rooms on the first floor require a small admittance fee while the 12 newer rooms on the third floor are completely free unless there is an ongoing class.

Kennywood Park

This is an amusement park located in Kennywood Boulevard in West Mifflin. People prefer spending a full day at amusement parks but we suggest that you head over to Kennywood in the evening. If you schedule your visit for around 5 pm, most people will have departed, which means fewer lines and tickets will definitely be much cheaper. As a bonus, evenings here are more magical due to the classic ambiance and the bright lights. If you intend to visit later in the year, Kennywood also hosts special events such as Fright Night and Holiday Lights throughout the months of November and December.

Arcade Comedy Theater

Arcade Comedy Theatre is located along Liberty Avenue in Downtown and every weekend the theatre offers comedy shows in various genres; improve, stand-up comedy, etc. The shows are also BYOB, which significantly boosts the laugh factor. If you dream of performing on stage, there is an Improv night that is hosted every 3rd Thursday of the month where you can take lessons on the fundamentals of Improv comedy.

Allegheny Observatory

The Allegheny Observatory is located along Riverview Avenue; the observatory offers tours for free on Thursdays and Fridays from April to October. Here you will get the chance to look through the powerful telescope and learn more about the history of the observatory. Note, however, while the tours may be free, you have to make a reservation.

St. Anthony’s Chapel

St. Anthony’s Chapel is located along Harpster Street; this little chapel holds the largest Catholic relic collection outside of the Vatican. St. Anthony’s holds about 5,000 relics that have been authenticated by the church. These relics include pieces of the cross, bones of some of the apostles, and a piece of Mary’s shawl. The chapel allows for self-guided tours as well as guides, so you can choose whichever one you are comfortable with. If you are a history buff, whether you are a Christian or not, this ancient history is bound to intrigue you.

Society for Contemporary Crafts

You will find this art gallery along Smallman Street; the gallery was established back in 1971 and has since been focused on exhibiting non-mainstream art for free. The art exhibits here are pretty broad in range in terms of style and subject. The gallery also offers activities for both adults and children, also for free, so be sure to tag the little ones along on your visit.

Public Art in Public Places

The Office of Public Art organizes self-guided tours during the summer; the tours take place at different places throughout the city. Explore architectural art and traditional art while simultaneously discovering parts of the city you have never visited. Log onto the Public Art website to find out when the next tours are scheduled and to download the map.
